Fort York’s boundaries are railway tracks to the north (which are south of Wellington Street West), Strachan Avenue to the west, Bathurst Street to the east, and Lake Shore Boulevard West to the south.
This neighbourhood is unique in that it’s very young and very old. The Fort York military garrison dates back to the late 1700s. However, in the past few years, the City of Toronto has approved condo developments in the area. There are a few projects that are underway. The two features that attracted military planners to the site at the end of the 18th century are the same as what drew property developers in the 21st: an amazing view of Lake Ontario and proximity to the island that’s now home to Billy Bishop airport.
There are other great reasons to love Fort York. The area is supremely walkable – residents can stroll to BMO Field for sporting events or Exhibition Place for Toronto’s famed end-of-summer festival The Ex. If they’re looking to embrace nature, the beautiful scenery of the Queen’s Quay West trails is right nearby, too!
It definitely doesn’t hurt that Fort York itself is a major draw for visitors from across the GTA. Over the past several years, the old garrison has become a popular outdoor event space. It’s hosted the Time Festival and the Arts & Crafts Field Trip, to name a few.
