Greenwood-Coxwell is a neighbourhood located south of Danforth Avenue and Milverton Boulevard, west of Greenwood and Knox Avenues, east of Coxwell Avenue, and north of Eastern Avenue.
As with other communities in the area, Greenwood-Coxwell started off as a small village in the 1850s. It was near George Leslie’s Toronto Nurseries. The area became home to gardeners and employees of local brick-making factories. Over the years, metal processing and lighting factories were established on Eastern Avenue, the neighbourhood’s southern boundary. While these factories provided employment for residents, they were also a source of pollution. Towards the end of the 20th century, economic conditions changed and the factories closed down. As a result, air quality in the community improved, which attracted people looking to buy property.
Today, the area is very popular with young families. Greenwood-Coxwell is a very ethnically diverse area, too. The three most popular languages you’ll hear are English, Urdu, and Cantonese. Greenwood-Coxwell is also home to Little India, the site of many South Asian shops and restaurants. Stop by the Gerrard India Bazaar, the largest marketplace of South Asian goods and services in North America. Although residents come from different backgrounds, they all appreciate the proximity to downtown Toronto, excellent access to public transportation, and a short commute to the Beaches neighbourhood. There’s also green space (Monarch Park has picnic tables, a playground, and an outdoor pool with a twisty water slide) so you can get in touch with nature.
