The High Park-Swansea neighbourhood is located on the shores of Lake Ontario. In fact, the lake is the southern boundary of the community. To the north, the boundary is Bloor Street. That’s actually the only street border of the neighbourhood; to the west, the boundary is the Humber River, and the eastern side of High-Park Swansea is the green space from which the community draws its name.
This neighbourhood has a rich history. In 1615, Etienne Brule was the first European to set foot in the area, encountering a First Nations tribe which already inhabited what is now known as High Park-Swansea. Grenadier Pond has given rise to legends about British troops stationed near there in 1812. Some people say the troops fished in the pond, while others tell a tale that a band of them lost their lives trying to cross it.
The first resident in the area was a Frenchman named Jean-Baptiste Rousseau. Rousseau left when other settlers established a sawmill. Over time, builders constructed homes, attracting new residents. A series of steel companies opened factories in the neighbourhood, giving those residents employment. After the steel factories closed, developers built condos on the land.
