Located East of downtown within the “Old” City of Toronto is a stunning neighborhood known simply as “The Beach”. The Beach, however, is not exactly an accurate term, as the neighborhood actually encompasses four beaches situated on Lake Ontario: Balmy Beach, Scarboro Beach, Kew Beach and Woodbine Beach. Woodbine Beach and Kew-Balmy Beach are Blue Flag certified for cleanliness, making them suitable for swimming. Situated within the boundaries of Victoria Park Avenue on the East to Kingston Road on the North, to Coxwell Avenue on the West, and South to Lake Ontario, the Beach is a major player in the East-central district of Toronto. Characterized by a large number of independent specialty stores, the commercial district of Queen Street East lies at the heart of The Beaches community, making shopping in the area an eclectic experience. The side streets branching off of Queen are lined with some incredible residential properties: semi-detached and large-scale Victorian, Edwardian and new-style houses can be found by the numbers. The area has seen some new development in recent years, but is largely characterized by a traditional “cottage-like” aesthetic. It is widely known as a wonderful area to raise a family, and at very least, a must visit location.
